Volkswagen's range of cars became similar to that of other large European automakers, with the exception of the Golf which has been the mainstay of the Volkswagen lineup since its introduction. Six generations of the Volkswagen Golf have been created. Despite the success of models like the Golf in the 1980s, Volkswagen had to face dramatic sales in the United States and Canada, as the Japanese and the Americans were able to compete with similar products at lower prices. In 1991, Volkswagen launched the third-generation Golf, which was European Car of the Year for 1992. With the arrival of Seat and Skoda automobiles on the market, Volkswagen had to move upmarket to change the perception of the company's products.
