The idea of creating a vehicle able to park in a small parking came from a Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch. The purpose of building such a car was to be affordable for young people. The Smart was initially nicknames the "Swatchmobile" and had similar design objective to the Citroën 2CV of the 1940s. See the ads Smart wanted below.
