Minerva was a Belgian luxury automobile manufacturer founded by a Dutchnan, Sylvain de Jong, and active from 1902 to 1938. The history of Minerva began in 1883 when Sylvain de Jong started a bicylcle and motorcycle factory in Antwerp, Belgium. He was the first to export engines to the UK to power the very first Triumph. From 1909 to 1914, the brand Minerva became one of the world's premier names in motorcycles and motorcycle engines. Some of the famous Minerva's customers include kings of Belgium, Sweden and Norway and Henry Ford. Minerva was appreciated not only in Europe, but in the United States as well, mostly among American film stars, politicians and industrialists. In the 1930s, Minerva company changed its name to Société Nouvelle Minerva, because of the financial crisis at the time. In 1934, Minerva decided to merge with another well-known Belgial automaker named Imperia. The latter continued to manufacture Minerva cars for a year. Some of the cars and trucks were exported to England and France under the name of Minerva-Imperias from 1937.
