GM Holden Ltd is based in Port Melbourne, Victoria. Holden's first car factory was located in Fishermens Bend (Port Melbourne), and completed in 1936, with construction beginning in 1939 in Pagewood. During the 1950s, Holden dominated the Australian car market, offering a broad range of locally produced vehicles. See the ads Holden wanted below.
Holden began to export vehicles in 1954. Despite the arrival of serious competitors—namely, Ford, Chrysler, and Japanese cars—in the 1960s, Holden's cars remained Australia's top-selling vehicles. See also the ads Holden wanted below.
