The company has changed its name several time. In 1898, Emilio de la Cuadra, started to produce electric automobile in Barcelona under the name of La Cuadra. In 1902, J. Castro became the new owner and the company was renamed as Fábrica Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles. Two years later, they changed it again to La Hispano-Suiza Fábrica de Automóviles. During World War I, Hispano-Suiza was spcialized in aircraft engines. After World War I, they returned to automobile engine. The first Hispano-Suiza model was introduced in 1919 and called H6.
