Fredrick Simms, an Englishman born in Hamburg, befriended Gottlieb Daimler and took up the patent rights for his engine. Simms found an ideal site in Cheltenham with all the machinery and labour required. Simms, together with Robert Bosch, had also developed a low-tension magneto. Daimler developed the Silent Knight with double sleeve valve engine. In 1922, Daimler became the first company to realise the potential of car radio, but as the price was approximately 25% of the cost of the car, this accessory did not become immediately popular. In 1989, Ford took over Jaguar and Daimler. 1992 saw the end of production of the DS420 Limousine, the only model car still produced that was not based on a Jaguar model. The name 'Daimler' continued to be used to differentiate top-line XJ Jaguars. In July 2005, the Daimler Super Eight was launched, derived from the Jaguar X350. A Daimler Limousine was the Queen Mother’s favorite car. Daimlers were also common British police cars.
