GM Daewoo Auto & Technology was first established as National Motor in 1937 in Bupyeong-gu, South Korea. After establishing collaborations with Toyota, the company changed its name to Shinjin Motor. Daewoo has manufacturing plants in Korea, Vietnam, China, Thailand, India, and Colombia. Its cars are marketed in over 140 countries. The first Daewoo models were based on the Opel Kadett E, and sold around the world under the name of Daewoo LeMans or Pontiac LeMans. Most Daewoos are branded as Chevrolets in most markets in order to promote General Motors' Chevrolet brand worldwide. Exceptions are made in China, where the cars are introduced as Buick and Chevrolet, in South Korea as GM Daewoo, in Vietnam where Daewoo is retained, in Australia and New Zealand as Holden, the United States as Chevrolet and Suzuki, and in Canada as Chevrolet, Pontiac, and Suzuki.
