The son of a Dutch diamond merchant, Lévie Citroen, and of Polish Macha Kleinan, André Gustave Citroen was born on February 5, 1878 in Paris. He is ten years old when he discovers Jules Verne of which he becomes an assiduous reader. He buys the patent of gear wheels manufacture (hence the chevron of the Citroen logo). As of the end of the First World War, he manufactures cars Quai de Javel in Paris. A brilliant inventor, he proves to be a poor businessman. Produced from 1934 to 1957, the Traction (French for front wheel drive) influenced the majority of the world's manufacturers, even the Americans who were resolutely attached to rear drive. At that time, even if the idea of a popular car with front wheel drive is in the air, Citroen is the first manufacturer to master this technology and to popularize the use of it. A true technical revolution, the Traction is the child of two major characters guided by a common desire of innovation and originality: Andre Citroen and André Lefebvre. The first brings financial indutrial resource and the second the technical skills. At the time of the official presentation in 1934, the press will greet their work and their vision of the car by qualifying the new model "of daring, rich in original solutions and different from what was made hitherto". Paris, October 1, 1955. The DS is just born. Citroen presents a car completely out of the ordinary. The make has just revealed what will replace the famous Traction of Andre Citroen. Today, 50 years have passed since its presentation the DS has joined two other mythical creations which are Traction and the 2 CV.
