Company founded in Detroit by David Dunkar Buick with the first car being equipped with a flat-twin engine placed transversally on the floor, with a two speed gear box and a chain drive. In 1908, Buick becomes one of four major players of the American car industry and merges with Ford, Reo and Maxwell-Briscoe General Motors which absorbs then Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Oakland. From 1910 to 1920, Buick has the chance to have at its head Charles Nash, who is succeeded by Walter Chrysler. The latter conceives the first Buick Six in 1914. In 1961, the Special is Buick's first attempt to release a compact car equipped with a V8 of 3,5 liters entirely out of aluminium, replaced the following year by a cast steel V6. Follow then Riviera Sport Coupe from 1964, Skylark Gran Sport of 1966, the GS 400 of 1967 and some convertibles between 1972 and 1974. New bodies appear in 1973 under the name of Century and in 1974, Apollo compact is launched with a six-cylinder car. A V6 given up in 1967 reappears with the Skyhawk.
