The history of this make begins in 1916 by the merger of 2 factories in Munich: Rapp Motorenwerke and Gustav Otto Flugmaschinfabrik. The corporate name initially modified in Bayerisch Flugzeug Werke finally gives, in 1918, Bayerisch Motoren Werke (BMW). See the ads BMW wanted below.
At the end of 1928, BMW acquired the factory of Eisenach vehicles, in Eisenach, a few 330 km to the north of Munich. Eisenach had been making cars since 1899. In 1928, the firm acquires the licences and the installations of the Dixi company which builds the Austin Seven under licence. The first car which bears the name of BMW is thus an Austin Seven with unimportant modifications. And less than a decade after the war, a luxurious new sedan with BMW logo and propelled by a V8, saw the day. The modern history of BMW starts with the 1500 of 1962, which had 4 cylinders with overhead valves, brake discs and independent suspension on the four wheels. The 1500 was originally a middle class family sedan; but BMW made a powerful car of it. The 1500 began the BMW sporting tradition. BMW 1500 developed a small version 2 doors and a model, the 2002, introduced to the American market, with the sport-sedan concept of BMW. Then came the 6 cylinders. Visit the official BMW site.
