Bentley's history can be divided into 3 ownership periods: 1) Early Bentleys (1921-1939); 2) Rolls-Royce built Bentleys (1946-2002); 3) Volkswagen built Bentleys (2003 onwards). See the ads Bentley wanted below.
Needed cars
Bentley Motors built bigger and faster cars: the 41/2-litre in 1927, the Speed Six in 1928, the supercharged 41/2-litre in 1929 and then the 'big daddy' of them all, the 8-litre in 1930. All of these were sporting cars built around the basic engine design pioneered in the 3-litre. Social trends in the late 1920s/early 1930s were mirrored in a rise in smaller owner-driver saloon cars with style, performance and comfort. Rolls-Royce bought Bentley Motors in November 1931, taking on W O as a development engineer. Few demands are too challenging. The Mulliner Bentley Studio is as ready to design a high-performance aluminum-panelled Bentley with '30s detailing and no rear seats, as a family wedding car with pictorial rear windows and no front passenger seat, to allow for the bride's train. A specification for a state limousine might call for anything from standing bars on the roof and outsize cigar ashtrays to armed forces comms centres and bullet-proofing. Many options for new builds can also be applied to used or restored cars if required, but if the requirement is to respect the original specification down to the last detail, that will be done. Has the Studio ever been defeated by a commission? "We were once asked to do a completely gold-plated motor car - including the engine. Gold-plating to that level, we could never get all the surfaces looking the same, so we said no. That is very, very rare." No other motor manufacturer can offer so much flexibility in creating a car. Visit the official Bentley site. A history of Bentley can be found on Wikipedia. Here is a selection of Bentley resources, and here are some Bentley dealers who might be interested in purchasing your car. See also the ads Bentley wanted below.
