Since his training as a blacksmith to his job as chief of engine cars construction at Benz and Co, August Horch will not cease to improve the inventions of its predecessors. As soon as he starts his own company in 1899, by opening a small workshop in Cologne, this mechanics genius will quickly be led to build his own car. As soon as the Audi make reappeared in 1969, it caused the passion of the private pilots who hastened to tune the engines of Audi Super 90, then of the 80 GTE. Four years later, the idea of 4WD germinated in the head of the engineers and Audi technicians. And, in 1978, a quattro prototype made its first turns of wheels in the Alps and on the track of Hockenheim. Aimed initially at sports, Audi quattro appeared a frightening competitor on all the rally tracks of the world, with at its wheel high level pilots such Finnish Hannu Mikola, the Frenchwoman Michele Mouton or Walter Rörl.
